I was raised on a farm near Dighton, in southwest Kansas. After graduating from Dighton High School in 1975, I attended the University of Kansas, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism in 1979. I then began my career in Johnson County and have lived here ever since. I spent 10 years as an editor for two trade publications, first at Vance Publishing Corp. with The Packer, a newspaper for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry, and then at Sosland Publishing Co. with Milling & Baking News, a magazine for the grain handling, flour milling and commercial baking industries.
In 1989, I left full-time employment to raise my family. Over the years, I did free-lance writing and contracted with the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the Kansas Bankers Association for communications work. Most recently, for 12 years I was executive director of a trade association for heating and cooling contractors, the Kansas City Chapter of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America.
My husband, Mike, married in 1982 and we have two daughters. Laurie is a graduate of KU and is an aspiring teacher. Katie graduated from the University of Arkansas and is an engineer in Phoenix, where she also dances with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury Hip Hop Squad. We have lived in Lenexa since 1982.
Volunteering in the community has been a priority for me. This includes being actively involved in the PTAs at Shawanoe Elementary School and Trailridge Middle School and the PTSA and several booster clubs at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. In addition, I was a Girl Scout leader for 14 years and taught elementary grades Sunday school for 11 years at Old Mission United Methodist Church, where I have been a member for nearly 40 years. And, I have served eight terms as a Republican Precinct Committeewoman.
As a longtime resident of Lenexa and Kansas House District 23, I understand this community, its history, its people and their concerns. I have worked hard to help restore Kansas values and common sense to the Legislature. It is an honor to represent the voters of District 23 in the Kansas House of Representatives.
